Doug Gerken, 69, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025. He was born on January 2, 1956. A lifelong resident of Puyallup, Doug’s life was deeply rooted in family, faith, and a love for the simple pleasures that brought him joy.

Doug was the youngest of four sons born to Rev. Dr. Erwin and Willene Gerken. As the baby of the family, he was cherished by his older brothers—Norman, Dan (wife Ruth), and Chuck (wife Kathy)—who once proudly took him to school for show-and-tell. That early sense of camaraderie and connection would remain a hallmark of Doug’s life.

He graduated from Concordia High School and continued his education at Concordia Junior College in Portland, Oregon. While there, Doug played basketball, soccer and football and formed lasting friendships that became the source of many fond memories and colorful stories he loved to share.

Doug was a hardworking man who took pride in every job he held. He began his career as a candy maker at Brown & Haley and spent ten consecutive years making caramel corn at the fair—a tradition that reflected both his work ethic and his sweet tooth. He also worked at Tacoma Electric and PQ Corporation before retiring from Platt Electric. Through each role, Doug brought quiet dedication and reliability. He was always willing to volunteer and serve. Doug was very caring and made himself available to help meet the needs of others. He demonstrated both commitment and loyalty to family and friends.

At home, Doug found his greatest happiness. He was a devoted husband to Denise Gerken and a loving father to daughters Jessica (husband Scott) and Lindsay (husband Shaenan). His grandchildren—Luke, Parker, and Oliver— brought him immense joy. Doug also shared close bonds with his nephews John, Scott, Steve, Tom, and Mark and their families.

Doug had a laid-back spirit that defined much of his personality. With a “What Me Worry” approach to life, he embraced comfort over convention—often seen in his signature outfit of shorts, hoodie, and slides regardless of the season. He enjoyed sports, classic cars (which he took great pride in), Steely Dan’s music, and above all else—Jesus.

Though quiet by nature, Doug had a generous heart and an unmistakable sense of humor that left an impression on everyone who knew him. His funky lifestyle choices were uniquely his own—and they made him unforgettable.

A man who valued home above all else, Doug found peace surrounded by family in the place he loved most. His presence will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 16, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church 140 East 56th Street
