Joanne D. Hyland

January 21, 1935 — June 7, 2025

Joanne was born in Tacoma, Washington on January 21, 1935 to her loving parents, Helmer and Dorothy Green. Joanne grew up in Sumner Washington where she was raised with her sister Ginger. Joanne attended Sumner High School, graduating class of 1953. While attending high school, Joanne enjoyed playing the flute in band, and marching with her band members in the Sumner daffodil parades. During the summers, Joanne spent a lot of her time working in the daffodil bulb fields, and at the local berry farms. At 17, while still attending high school, Joanne got a job as a proofreader for the Sumner News Review, and continued working there for several years after she graduated.

Ron and Joanne met in school, they were both in band together for several years. During this time, the friendship grew, and on July 14, 1956, Joanne married the love of her life, Ron Hyland, or as some us like to call him, Chief Hyland. They had two wonderful sons, Randy and Tim…Tim who was also known to us as “Sumner sweeper”. While raising their two children, Joanne worked for over 20 years in the drugstore and pharmacy business. She worked for Breen’s pharmacy and Mark‘s pharmacy in Sumner, Washington for many years.

Joanne was very active in her community. In her early years, she worked as a Cub Scout Den Mother, which gave her great joy. She also enjoyed spending many years helping decorate the floats for the Sumner Daffodil parades, and volunteer many hours at the Sumner police department, where she helped out in many different areas within the department. But one of her true highlights of volunteering there was getting to work alongside her husband, Chief Hyland.

Joanne enjoyed many camping and fishing trips with her husband, Ron. She enjoyed her many travels and seeing all the different places. Joanne also enjoyed many clubs. She was a member of the Arts and Crafts Club for over 30 years, and enjoyed being apart of an aerobics group for 20+ years.

But Joanne‘s greatest joys were her family, friends, and her community.

Joanne is proceeded in death by her father Helmer, her mother, Dorothy, sister, Ginger and son, Tim. Joanne is survived by her husband, Ron of 69 years, son, Randy (Glenda), two grandchildren, Douglas and Niccole, four great grandchildren, Randy Lee, Aaliyah, Natalie and Colton.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 19, 1:30 PM at Powers funeral home, 320 W. Pioneer Ave., Puyallup, WA 98371. With reception to follow.
