Karl Daniel Cordes

Karl Daniel “Butch” Cordes, age 82, of Puyallup, Washington, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Karl was born on December 16, 1943, in Puyallup, Washington, to Karl and Barbara Cordes. He was preceded in death by his father, Karl Cordes; his mother, Barbara Cordes; and his sister, Carol Benthien.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy Cordes; his son, Karl Cordes (Adrienne); and his daughter, Katie Speckert (Sean). He was a proud grandfather to Elizabeth, Cassandra, Karl, and Kenzie Cordes, as well as Gavin and Karmen Speckert. He is also survived by his sister, Christy Elander (Donald), along with numerous nieces and nephews who will dearly miss him.

Karl dedicated his professional life to education, retiring in 1997 after 30 years of service. He spent 28 of those years in the Highline School District, where he taught history at both Pacific Middle School and Mt. Rainier High School. In 1979, he moved to Mt. Rainier, where he made a lasting impact not only in the classroom but also in athletics. Beginning in the 1981–82 season, Karl served as Head Boys Basketball Coach for 15 years. Under his leadership, the Rams never experienced a losing season and made three state tournament appearances. In addition to coaching basketball, Karl served as Athletic Director, Head Track Coach, and contributed to the football program, leaving a legacy of mentorship, discipline, and commitment to his students and athletes.

Beyond his career in education, Karl had a passion for racing in his younger years. He spent time working on a Winston West Grand National stock car, traveling throughout the West Coast and beyond. A highlight of his racing experience came in 1987, when he had the opportunity to serve as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Sr. at Seattle International Raceway. Even in racing, Karl’s focus remained rooted in family, which was always at the center of his life.

Karl’s greatest joy was time spent with his family. He cherished visits to the family’s lake property and Lake Cushman, beach trips to Seaside and Long Beach, and especially the many memories made at Disneyland—his favorite place to spoil and watch his children and grandchildren. Karl was the very definition of a devoted family man, and his love, guidance, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of life open house will be held on Sunday, June 28, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 14306 110th Ave Ct E, Puyallup, WA 98374.
