It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Mary Hasselle (Robinson) Bewley, 88, of Eatonville, on July 24, 2025.
Mary was born February 19, 1937 in Oakland, California to parents Hewitt and Jeanette Robinson. Raised in Piedmont CA, she lived two doors down from the grandparents of a dashing young Air Force Lieutenant named Dan Bewley, and a chance meeting in 1955 dictated the rest of their lives. After graduating from Stanford University with a BA ('58) and an MA ('59) in Education, Mary and Dan were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oakland, CA on May 9, 1959. They travelled with the Air Force from California, to Japan, to McChord AFB living in Lakewood before eventually moving to Eatonville where they built a beautiful life for their family. Mary's garden contains the most stunning dogwood trees, apple, cherry, and fig trees, lilac, hydrangea and rose bushes, and raspberry bushes from which she always supplied the family with her famous raspberry "Grandma jam".
Mary and Dan moved to Eatonville in 1973 raising their children through the Eatonville school system, where she was a substitute teacher for 30 years and was a dedicated elementary teacher teaching the "IA - Individual Achievement" program in the district elementary schools, targeting high-achieving 4th & 5th graders exposing them to STEM topics and taking them to scholastic competitions around the state.
Mary was also a long-standing member of the Dogwood Garden Club of Eatonville since 1974, serving as president 3 times. Her creativity and flair for flower arranging never faded, as she was still entering design competitions through her 87th year, being awarded the "Best in Show of Artistic Design" at the Washington State Fair at least 34 times. Mary led the Silver Lake 4H club and remained active in the 4H community for over 3 decades. Between leading, judging and supervising at the county and state levels, her passion for helping local children grow and flourish with useful and tangible skills was unwavering. Also active in Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Society and the Stella Hagen Orthopedic Guild, Mary was a devoted and much-admired community member known for her kind demeanor and generous spirit by all who were blessed to know her.
She twice survived breast cancer, beating it once in 1998 and again in 2021, proving that her soft demeanor was balanced by a fierce inner warrior. She was a pillar of strength, faith, and perseverance.
Mary is survived by her faithful husband of 66 years Dan Bewley; her children Debbie (Bewley) Price of Eatonville, Tom Bewley of Colorado Springs, and Karen (Bewley) Trujillo of Austin; as well as her 7 grandchildren Megan (Price) Hunsaker & Rachel Price, Allison, Charlie & Gabriella Trujillo, and Zachary & Nadia Bewley. She is preceded in death by her son Samuel, and sister Jeanette (Robinson) Swanson.
To honor Mary's legacy, the family invites those wishing to express sympathy to consider a donation to the Mary Bewley Memorial Scholarship Fund or mail a donation to Eatonville Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 1155, Eatonville, WA 98328
