Ron Glenn Hyland (Chief) passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup Washington, with his son Randy and wife Glenda by his side. Ron passed 6 1/2 short weeks after his wife Joanne‘s passing on June 7, 2025.  They were married 69 years.

 Ron was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on November 9, 1934 to his loving parents, William and Ethel Hyland. Ron grew up with his two brothers, Wayne and Russell, and five sisters, Opal, Beulah, Myrna, Irene and Beverly. Ron’s parents owned and operated a skating rink and dance hall during his younger days which created lots of fun and great memories for Ron and his Siblings. After moving to Yakama for a short period, Ron’s family moved to Sumner, Washington in 1944 where Ron attended Sumner High School, graduating class of 1952. 

Ron met Joanne in High School where he played basketball and baseball, and he also played the trumpet in band alongside (unbeknownst to Ron) his future wife, Joanne, who played the flute. During their time together in school, there friendship grew, and on July 14, 1956 Ron married the love of his life, Joanne Green.  They had two wonderful sons, Randy and Tim. 

Ron enlisted in the Navy reserves in February of 1953 and served eight years. While in the reserves, Ron was taking night classes at Highland and Green River community college in preparation for his future career in law enforcement, and in 1957 Ron was hired on at the Sumner Police Department where Ron served 38 years, 27 of those being Chief of Police. During Ron’s time as an officer, he also graduated in 1974 from the FBI national Academy, 96th session. 

Ron was a leader with every organization he associated with. He was a life member of Washington State Police and Sheriffs Association where he served 13 years as the treasurer. Past President and was a current member of Washington State Chapter of The FBINAA. Past President and was a current member of the Rotary Club of Sumner. Past President of the Washington Chapter of The Carriage Travel Club. Member of the Good Sam’s Travel Club. Life member of the Auburn Elks. 

Ron’s biggest joys in life were fishing, traveling and camping in their fifth wheel with his wife, Joanne by his side. They also had many memorable and fun times with their two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Ron also enjoyed a good glass of scotch every now and then. 

Ron is proceeded in death by his wife, Joanne, his father, William, mother, Ethel, son, Tim, brothers Wayne, and Russell, sisters, Beulah , Opal, Myrna, and Beverly. Ron is survived by his sister Irene; son Randy (Glenda); grandchildren Douglas and Niccole; and great grandchildren Randy Lee, Aaliyah, Natalie and Colton. 

Funeral services will be held on August 13, at 11:30 AM at Sumner Cemetery, 12324 Valley Ave. E., Puyallup, WA 98372. Following the graveside service, please join us for a celebration of Ron’s life at Kelly Farms Event Hall, 20021 Sumner Buckley Highway E., Bonney Lake, WA 98391.
