John Cox Obituary

John Stuart Cox, 85, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Good Samaritan’s Hospital. Born November 25, 1937, in Cortez, Colorado, he was the son of Jacob Herbert and Madalene Cox. Raised and educated in Tacoma, he was in the first graduating class of Franklin Pierce High School in 1956. John retired as a master sergeant in the Washington National Guard in 1993.

On May 14, 1960, John was married to Betty Omdal at Burlington Edison Church. The couple made their home in Tacoma, where they raised their two sons, Michael and Mark.

John loved the Lord dearly and faithfully served in the church. He was always quick to offer to help others. He served as an AWANA commander, Sunday School superintendent, youth group leader, deacon, and song leader. John also helped with the building of Tacoma Baptist School and Fernhill Baptist Church.

He was an avid hiker and photographer. He loved spending time with his family and friends camping, fishing, and playing golf. John was a big supporter of the local football teams the Seahawks and Huskies.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty, two sons and daughters in law – Mike and Sheri Cox and Mark and Maryann Cox, four grandchildren – Carl Cox, Cassy & Ian Porter, Macayla Cox, and Corbin Cox – two great grandchildren – Logan and Alex Porter – and his sister, Beverly McDuffie.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Peggy Cox and Cynthia Christen.

He will be remembered for the love he had for his family, especially his grandchildren, and the passion he had for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are comforted to know that John is in the presence of his Lord now and that we will be reunited with him one day.

A memorial for John will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, June 24th at Temple Baptist Church.
