Paul Nieves Obituary

On April 3, 2024, Paul (Pablo) Nieves passed away peacefully at the age of 96, surrounded by family at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way. He was born in San German, Puerto Rico on July 26,1927 and grew up in New York City before enlisting in the US Army in 1948. During his military service, he won his first championship trophy in 1948 as a middleweight boxer while stationed in Germany. In 1960, he was deployed to Berlin during the Cold War conflict construction of the Berlin Wall and awarded the armed forces expeditionary medal. He served two tours in the Vietnam war and was awarded the purple heart, bronze star, and the national defense service metal with oak leaf cluster. He retired after 26 years of service as a combat engineer and enjoyed his retirement years at his home in Federal Way, later moving to Gen Care Assisted Living. During his retirement he also enjoyed playing the conga drums with friends in the band " The Bob Alex Band" at the Muckleshoot Casino. He was survived by his son, Pablo Nieves, Jr. (Stephanie), his daughters, Valerie Barber (Bruce) and Vonda Williams, (Dennis) his stepson Russell Chester and stepdaughters Kaye Snyder (John) and Faye Burnett, as well as eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Pablo was a charismatic personality who loved his family, friends, music, and dancing.
